3. The market
Thrane & Thrane develops and provides global mobile communication based on sophisticated satellite and radio technology. Demand is growing. The human need - or desire - for communicating with others is seeing sustained growth. Voice and data. High-speed transmision. At work or in your spare time. 24 hours a day. Anywhere. Often in extreme conditions. People quickly get used to enhanced quality, comfort and reliability - also when it comes to communication.
Thrane & Thrane's products are based on the satellite system Inmarsat. The existing Inmarsat-3 satellite system consists of four satellites plus one spare satellite. At a height of some 36.000 km above the earth the four satellites provide coverage of 98% of the earth's surface. The satellites have been in service since the end of 1996, and the next generation of satellites - named BGAN - was introduced in the beginning of December 2005. BGAN provides voice and data services at transmisssion speeds of up to 492 kbps, almost 8 times faster than ordinary ISDN.
4. Products
Thrane & Thrane offers terminals to four market areas:
- Thrane & Thrane's products for the maritime market target professional users and are used, among other purposes, for
the GMDSS distress and safety system. The equipment is typically used by merchant vessels, commercial vessels, fi shing vessels and pleasure craft for radio and satellite communication. Customers include mainly shipyards and commercial and private shipowners.
-
Thrane & Thrane's products targeting the land mobile market comprise portable terminals for personal communication systems. In addition, the company manufactures terminals for vehicular use. Typical customers are international aid organisations, governments, the media and oil, gas and mining companies.
- Thrane & Thrane's aeronautical products comprise communication equipment for corporate jets and military aircraft. The products support safety, operational, cockpit and passenger voice and data applications.
- The market for systems consists of land earth stations for the various Inmarsat services. The land earth stations are
connected to the terrestrial network, providing the interface between the satellite system on the one hand and the public switched telephone network, cellular networks and the Internet on the other.
The actual production of Thrane & Thrane's products has been outsourced to sub-contractors.
